Hello Parents, depending on where are you may have started having to deal with your little one’s eczema. In the Northeast where we are, we have to start our eczema prevention routine the moment we turn on the heat in our home.
There are several ways to help prevent or treat baby’s eczema, especially when it comes to bathing. Look at the soap you use. Stick to dye and fragrance free soaps, those are the key culprits that cause irritation. We like the California Baby Super Sensitive Shampoo & Body Wash.
Next, be sure to turn down the temperature of the bath water. It should be lukewarm, as the hot water can further irritate skin.
Immediately following bath, gently pat skin dry. When our little one’s eczema got especially bad, we didn’t even use his terry towel, and opted instead for using a few Aden and Anais swaddle blankets. Make sure to smooth on plenty of lotion (our favorite is Babyganics Eczema Lotion) to seal in the moisture from the bath. Again make sure it is dye and fragrance free or specifically for treating eczema.
Other factors to look at is your clothes, make sure you are using a mild detergent when washing your clothes. A build up of harsh detergent will cause skin breakouts in the most sensitive areas.
Dryness in the air is also a major culprit. Be sure to use a humidifier (the unheated kind) every night to help prevent flare-ups. Plus, the humidifier will do double duty when your little one catches every cold that comes around.
Unfortunately there is no cure for getting rid of eczema you can only control it. But by making some small changes you can help keep your little one comfy, cozy and cuddly all winter long.
